Dear colleagues,

For my first message to you about the international psychoanalytic website since the APsaA meetings and the stunning election outcomes which I hope you all know by now, I will begin by saying that our editors don’t skip a beat in providing us with varied and interesting posts. I am omitting some in the Announcements which had been in previous posts from me. As for my own choices, I am starting in medias res with a post from the book section, ( having to do with my interest in children and abuse) as well as a few others, but encourage you to also make your own choices. The interviews on UTube are wonderful!

My suggestions for this week:
1) Please read and, as I did, imagine how you would write a review which Katie Roiphe did of “Girl Land” – an eternally written book on how to protect young girls from the world, no matter what society we are talking about. Could more have been said …? Girls in different parts of the world, which is now so small, have different issues to deal with.

2) The Dangerous Method Posts continue to be riveting.

3) Please acquaint yourselves with all the prominent 2011 Sigourney Award winners.

4) Interested in the analysis of the emotional side of finance? You will find David Tuckett’s ( he is Fellow, Institute of Psychoanalysis; Professor, University College London) excerpt from Minding the Markets: an Emotional Finance Five of Financial Intstabiltiy in the Huffington Post quite provocative and possibly accurate?

5) The General News category contains several posts on psychoanalysis from concerns about its current plight to Freud’s Moses and Monotheism. All are well written and worth reading/reviewing and commenting on!!

Click Here to Read The Pight of Psychoanalysis:

6) We have known from our work that stress causes dysfunction, but it is rather disquieting that science has discovered that “being stressed out, coupled with history of stressful life events” shrinks your frontal lobes. Please read in the Science Category.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Leah and I had an exciting visit with Mark Solms, the well-known psychoanalyst and neuropsychologist who has done so much to shape contemporary views of the dreaming brain and the neuroscience of subjectivity. Mark was quite interested in Beth Kalish’s and my findings about dreams among the Achuar in the Amazon. We talked about those at some length and considered the issue of worldwide similarities in dream contents in relation to the neuroscience of dreaming. There may be further developments about this topic as we look to the future. He also had lots to say about his debates with Alan Hobson and the current state of scientific research on the….

Dear Colleagues,

As you are recovering from what I hope was an enjoyable Thanksgiving feast, unless you are traveling during this holiday weekend, you will have a little more time to read the variety of posts and comment on the international psychoanalysis website. The increasing global financial and political turbulence is reflected in this week***s content. The issue of medical and mental health coverage in the USA is also much more prominent.

Having chosen a few posts that stood out for me, I would especially direct you to the Annoucements which I usually just list. Austen Riggs has a new director and CEO, Donald E. Rosen, M.D.*** He is conducting a clinician survey and is asking the following questions: * Treatment modalities you see as effective;

* Changes in treatment approaches you foresee;

**** Which treatment centers you view as outstanding;

* Trends in your practice that indicate an increase in the number of treatment-resistant patients

I think that this is a marvelous for psychoanalysts to raise their voices, , and make a contribution and be heard at a marvelous residential treatment center in Stockbridge, MA, which has traditionally been a bastion of psychodynamic treatment. Please consider responding.

Having underscored this, let me give you my choices this week, followed by the table of contents:

1) Clinician Survey from Austen Riggs
Click Here to Read: This Article

2) I would urge you to read both books listed below on Freudianism and Marxism , and on Freud***s Free Clinics. They both take us back to what psychoanalysis was about at its roots.
Click Here to Read: This Article

3) John Lagos*** The Life Report is very moving and I recommend it to all.
Click Here to Read: This Article

4) The posts on the film ***A Dangerous Method*** are numerous and important for its historical value to us, as, beyond knowing that Freud, Jung and Sabina Speilrein were the principals in the story *** the veracity of the film cannot be proven and as you know has been challenged.
Click Here to Read: This Article

5) Reading the paper by Jacob Arlow on being a candidate in the Forties, and by Robert Langs on Psychoanalysis and Science are both interesting and thought provoking!

Jacob Arlow:

Robert Langs:

Click Here to Read: This Article

6) Last but not least may we be practicing next in outer space? ***Stephen Hawking, who has Lou Gehrig’s disease, leaving him almost completely paralyzed and unable to speak. says the colonization of outer space is key to the survival of humankind, predicting it will be difficult for the world’s inhabitants “to avoid disaster in the next hundred years.”

3) Analysts on the Front Lines: Four WW-II Veterans Recall their Combat Experience (Part 1)

On December 5, 1996, four World-War II combat veterans who are also psychoanalysts at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute got together for a very special Veteran***s Day presentation. Each of the four shared stories of their actual combat experience on the front lines during Worls War II. In these insightful memoirs, many personal, heroic, and painful memories were shared with the audience, and a fascinating and engaging Q & A session followed the program. The four analysts involved were M.Donald Coleman (also moderator), Howard Schlossman, Murray Nadelman, and Eugene Kaplan. This program captures some truly historic memories and is quite moving. (This post is part 1 of a 2 part series with Eugene Kaplan***s presentation and the
question-and-answer session )

Dear Colleagues,

During a much better weekend than last week, the post on the international website are multiplying and flourishing as you may all have noticed from the enormous variety and their informative nature.

My picks this week, which by no means dwarf the rest of the posts are:

1) I suggest reading the interesting clip about Gordon Brown’s taste in art in the ART category. Click Here to Read

2) Similarly, did you know that Rembrandt’s choice of Jewish models was a departure from lthe then current art? It is noteworthy in the same category.

3) Marilyn S. Jacobs, PhD,’s review of Freud’s Free Clinics: Psychoanalysis and Social Justice, 1918-1938 by Elizabeth Ann Danto is timely in reminding us of the original connection between the rise of psychoanalysis and the European progressive social movement after WWI. This is a must read for psychoanalysts of today. Click Here to Read

5) 60 plus years later, ***The Power of Witnessing*** demonstrate the need thru it many contributions of keeping the memory alive in order to transcend the trauma as well as understand current traumatic situations and the help that we can give in the two person psychoanalytic/psychodynamic treatment. Click Click Here to Read

6) The paper “the Road to Unknowing” by Joarge L. Ahumada is an excellent commentary on the importance of identity. Click Here to Read

psychoanalysts expressed this commitment by providing services to the
working classes and the poor. From 1920 until 1938, psychoanalytic
treatment centers were opened in ten cities and seven countries,
including Vienna, Berlin and Budapest. The author interprets this
trend as due to *** *** the heady climate of progressivism and social
movements between the two world, wars *** (in which) *** psychoanalysis
was supposed to share in the transformation of civil society, and
these new outpatient treatment centers were to help restore people to
their inherently good and productive selves*** (p. 3). The author
describes how the involvement of the first psychoanalysts was intended
to promote liberation and contribute to the struggle for a better
world.***

Order a Complete Set of Videos from the Ulm Conference: Psychoanalytic Process Research Strategies III—June 4-6, 2009. To order, please go to www.IPBooks.net and reserve your copy.

THE BERLIN RESEARCH RESOURCE FOR THERAPEUTIC IMPASSES
The field of psychotherapy has come to a kind of maturation. Large scale, repeated meta-analytic findings on the shorter treatments of all kind basically agree that the portion of outcome variance explained by the kind of therapy on the average is around 10%; the outcome variation explained by the therapist´s capacity to establish a working treatment is around 20%; the outcome variation explained by the patient´s capacity to utilize treatment is around 30%. The rest is unexplained variance due to many factors etc. The most logical action – accepting these findings – is the support of patients´for mastering difficult situations in treatment – but excactly this has not yet been been conceptualized. We all agree that difficulties with patients will bring therapists to peer supervison (in Germany called intervision); why not have supervion for patients in difficult situations.

Long before treatments fail due to border crossing or obvious lack of care that make even the most patient patients leave, patients should be offered a facility to seek professional advice.

This research project will provide patients with a resource for scrupulous, impartial consultative review of a treatment and for recommendations for future care.

Protocols will be developed and researchers employed to discern and categorize the problems brought to the facility. Scientific papers that will inform and improve clinical practice are the goal of this work.

Recommendations will be made but no treatment will be available through the advisors of the project itself. The concept of the project uses a third person to disentangle problematic situations that hinder patients to better sttand through conflictual situation that other wose might lead to the experience of treatment failure.

It is therefore not a traditional “second opinion” offered to evaluate the suitability of a treatment before work is begun, nor will there be any possibility of using the project as an alternative treatment source. It will remain carefully and rigorously neutral in its study and recomendations.

Principal investigator: Horst Kaechele, MD, PhD
Associated researchers will be: Almuth Sellschopp, PhD; Jochen Eckert, PhD and others
Advisor: David Orlinsky, PhD
